While LaxRecords.com was started as a place to house the history of boys’ high school lacrosse, there are a lot of performances that do not make the lists. But those performances deserved to be highlighted.
Each Tuesday, I’ll highlight players, teams, coaches and games that caught my attention.
Knights Over Stags
Bishop O’Connell (Alexandria, Va.) posted what looks to be a landmark victory for the program on march 8. The Knights defeated DeMatha (Hyattsville, Md.) 8-7 in overtime in new head coach Kevin Giblin’s first conference matchup since taking over the O’Connell program.
Kadin Kightlinger scored three goals, including the game winner in overtime to earn the LaxRecords.com Player of the Week honors. Kightlinger scored 40 goals as a junior last year, following up a 30 goal sophomore year and 34 goals as a freshman. He committed to play at Gettysburg over the summer and plays club lacrosse with the Virginia Lacrosse Club.
The win marked the first time Bishop O’Connell defeated DeMatha in the program’s 27-year history. Last year, the Knights lost to the Stags 16-3.
Cubs Over Knights
Swapping coasts, Loyola-Los Angeles (Los Angeles) defeated Foothill-Santa Ana (Santa Ana, Calif.) 13-7 on March 11. The victory was the first ever for the Cubs over the Knights, snapping a 0-4 streak.
Eagles Over Marauders
In what seemed to be the theme of the week, Oak Hall (Fla.) defeated Maclay (Fla.) 9-7 on March 8. The win snapped an 11 game losing streak for Oak Hall against Maclay. Jackson Lamb totaled five points to lead the Eagles to victory.
While the games above marked significant program victories, there were several more in the last week that are worth mentioning.
Torrey Pines (San Diego, Calif.) defeated St. Ignatius Prep (San Francisco) 14-11 on March 11. Alderik van der Heyde (Middlebury commit) posted eight points on five assists and three goals, and earned a LaxRecords.com Player of the Week Notable Performance nomination. Spencer Grant (Michigan) dominated the start, winning 21 of 28 face offs for Torrey Pines. Shayne Grant (Richmond) scored four goals and had one assist and Zach Friedland (Georgetown) scored three in the win.
The win was the Falcons first win over the Wildcats since 2014. The teams last met in 2015 with St. Ignatius Prep coming out on top. St. Ignatius was the consensus No. 25 team in the nation in last week’s polls. Torrey Pines was not among the teams ranked anywhere, but that could change this week.
More Notable Results
In a meeting of defending state champions, Lambert (Suwanee, Ga.) defeated Cardinal Gibbons (Raleigh, N.C.) 18-8 on March 10.
